National Solo Photo Book Month?
I confess, I’m one of those strange souls who’s wondered “How hard could it really be to write a novel?” So I’ve been fascinated by National Novel Writing Month (aka NaNoWriMo). The idea is that you sign up, write a novel in a month, and if you manage to actually crank out a novel in the designated month, you’ve succeeded. Anyway, there’s this write a novel thing. And I thought that was pretty interesting, especially if you’re a writer (or a writer wannabee). Then I found out that my cousin Curt, of musical inclinations, had participated in National Solo Album Month and had actually produced an album. How cool is that? The goal of NaSoAlMo is to write the music, perform and record it – enough music to make a solo album, all in one month. Now, like a lot of photographers who haven’t done a book, I’ve always toyed with the idea of doing a book. Print on demand and such have made it much easier and less expensive to do.So what we need is a similar thing for photographers – a sort of Solo Photo Book Month.
Actually, this idea could be taken further, to such things as:
Declutter your house in a month.
Sell old unused gear in a month.
Plan a photo trip, actually go on the photo trip, actually edit the shoot, in a month.
Other things would be better if it was THIS month – as in “produce a solo photo book and upload it for on-demand printing IN the month of Jan 2008″.
I’ve just read through some of the stuff on NaNoWriMo, having been vaguely aware of it before.
What a spiffing idea a photobook-in-a-month event is.
I was planning on doing a book after the holidays. Should we declare January SoPhoBoMo?
Hi. Think this is a great idea. I currently organize NaSoAlMo but I’m also a photo hobbyist, and I love the idea of being challenged into photog hyperproductity for a month. I also have a free portfolio site people could use to display their work if they need a home on the web. I’ll write to you offline about possibly helping to throw an “official” contest together. I kinda like the ring of “PhotoBoMo”…
So is it shoot and publish the book in a month, or just publish …
Has to be shoot & publish in the month – that’s the ethos behind NaNoWriMo: no pre-work.
