Tonal Rendering

There’s an excellent post comparing the tonal rendering of 28mm lenses that can be mounted on an Leica M8 over on Siliceous.

And, if that wasn’t enough, there’s more on Photostream.

Check it out, it’s well worth reading.  I project that tonal rendering of lenses is going to be the next wave of thinking about lens characteristics, in the way that ‘bokeh’ was.

    Same link?

    Put on your scientist hat – what will influence tonal rendering by a lens? Is this a MFT measure under a different guise? Do we also need to know the detail frequency of the scene to really compare lenses?

    Sorry, link is now fixed.

    I never take the scientist hat off, not even in the shower. I think it’s held on with surgical staples, or something, it doesn’t seem removable.

    The MTF question is interesting. A little testing with targets that are similar but have different amounts of high frequency detail would probably answer that. One more thing on the list of things to do on a rainy afternoon…

    Imagine a target of pure black dots on a pure white background, with the dots taking up 50% of the area. This should look pure gray from far away and two spikes from close up. Move it away from the close position and you should get a good curve describing what is going on with micro contrast. Bet it looks like MTF – wonder if there is MTF data for the lenses being compared?

    The Leica lenses have mtf charts on the Leica site, but I can’t find one for the Ultron.

    Puts says that the Ultron is pretty close to the Summicron except wide open, but he doesn’t publish the actual data. He also says of the Ultron: “As a design philosphy this lens is a bit tuned to high resolution versus high contrast.”

    Not sure why it would be related to MTF or resolution. My first guess is the coating, which is directly related to contrast.
