Saloon, Salon

Some time ago, I had an email discussion with Colin Jago, which was in part a discussion of the difference in meaning between the word ‘salon’ and ‘saloon’ in American English.

So I was delighted to find, in Shangai, that they don’t have Art Salons, they have Art Saloons. Sorry I didn’t do more than snap a photo of the sign. From what I recall, the Guang Tian Art Saloon was not a hugely prosperous place, but to be honest I don’t recall very much. I think this was taken through a car window as we drove past the place – usual for tourist snaps.
